Rain squiggles down the glass
As the countryside slips by
And this slow train slides along
Blank pages of my sketchbooks
Await my restless pen
But I don't know how to begin
I just stare out the windows
Wondering why
I’ve spent all my life
Wondering where the edges lie
And how they overlap as it all slides by
Trains roll through the night
Through darkening hills
And the rain drives down, slants into the steel
I just stare out the windows
Wondering why
I’ve spent all my life
Wondering where the edges lie
And how they overlap as it all slides by
Constellations drip and sigh
Cascade across the sky
While that moon hangs low
And refuses to show
Its other side
Its other side

This Hungry Earth

Nestled in the cool dampness
Of the forest surrounding you
The swaying, golden lattice
Of branches curving all around me
A few shafts of sunlight
Filtering down through the leaves
Pinwheels, pinwheels
That gently change shape
The ancient trees
Are beckoning to you
They won't tell a soul
If you just melt into the dirt
Such peculiar instrumentation
This ongoing symphony
You could curl up inside
This revolving canopy
The ancient trees
Are beckoning to you
They won't tell a soul
If you just melt into the dirt
Listen, listen
They’re whispering to you
They won't tell a soul
If you just melt into the dirt

October

That sound you hear
That quiet restlessness
It’s just the leaves changing color
They’re singing you back home
They’re singing you back home
I’ve been waiting for the October clouds
To traverse those summer skies
And fill in the horizon
Oh the shapes we dissolve with our eyes
Oh the shapes we dissolve with our eyes
Woodsmoke in late autumn
The leaves are floating downstream
Like confetti
After the parade has come and gone
After the parade has come and gone
I’ve been waiting for the October clouds
To traverse those summer skies
And fill in the horizon
Oh the shapes we dissolve with our eyes
Oh the shapes we dissolve with our eyes
The tall thin grasses
Are clinging to the frozen earth
As the wild winds blow
And howl through the trees
